Find answers to common questions about 83
’83 is a Cold War–gone–hot, 40 vs 40 combined-arms, first-person tactical shooter that pits two teams of players against each other in massive battles across sprawling maps, fighting over objectives designed to reward the team with better strategy, coordination, and teamwork to seize the day.
Designed with accessible realism for the most enjoyable experience that gets you to the action fast without losing that realistic feel and depiction of the true lethality of war.
In the Closed Beta, you’ll be able to play as either the United States Army or the Soviet Ground Forces, the two core factions available in 83’s Early Access launch.
The Beta includes a selection of core infantry squad roles such as Rifleman, Machine Gunner, Marksman, Grenadier, and Anti-Tank, as well as Special Forces, Squad Leader and Commander roles for those looking to coordinate the action, take strategic control of the battlefield and call in off-map fire support.
‘83 has been designed to be mindful of your time, with matches lasting around 30-40 minutes.
We currently do not support controllers.
We plan to release a regular cadence of free updates post Early Access launch, adding new weapons, maps, and factions. More details about the post-launch roadmap will be revealed closer to release.
There will also be the option to purchase historically authentic in-game cosmetics with no effect on gameplay balance.
There are currently no plans for a single-player campaign or support for offline play with bots. However maps can be played offline, and there will be a shooting range.
’83 uses FairFight Anti-Cheat, which provides effective server-side protection that is both effective and unobtrusive for players, without relying on kernel-level drivers.
Yes. ’83 is an online-only multiplayer game and requires an active internet connection.
’83 is powered by Unreal Engine 5. At the latest count that is Unreal 5.6.
Please visit the ’83 Steam store page for an overview of minimum and recommended specifications.
We are aiming to introduce a map editor as part of our future development roadmap, post Early Access launch.
We will be announcing pricing of ‘83 nearer to Early Access launch.
FAQs - Closed Beta

The Closed Beta will feature one of the three maps that will be available at our Early Access launch, the iconic Duga radar station known as Woodpecker. This is a dense, forested battleground built around long sightlines, hard cover, and rapid flanking routes. Expect a blend of mid-to-long range engagements with sudden close-quarters clashes when squads collapse on the objective.
The mode available is Assault, a two-round, objective-based battle inspired by the fan-favourite ‘Territories’ mode from Rising Storm. One team attacks, attempting to capture a series of objectives in sequence, while the defenders must hold their ground until the timer runs out, or the attackers run out of reinforcement tickets. Teams will then switch sides in the second round.
Please be aware that the build you will play is a work-in-progress and you can expect to see some unpolished art and animations and to encounter some bugs. And while this Closed Beta represents just a slice of what '83 will offer at Early Access launch, it’s built to give players a feel for the core mechanics, tight squad-based coordination, role-based gameplay, and the relentless push-pull of 83’s combat.
The ‘83 Beta will be available between the 12.00 20th March - 23.00 21st March GMT.
The Early Access release will feature:
- Tanks and the Tank Crew role.
- Three maps featuring nine scenarios set across various iconic Cold War locations.
- Two fully fledged game modes - Frontlines and Assault.

’83 will launch in Early Access later this year.
At Early Access, ’83 will deliver the foundation of the full experience: large-scale 40 vs 40 tactical FPS battles set in an alternate Cold War timeline.
Early Access is just the beginning and player feedback will directly shape our development, be instrumental in balancing, as well as play a part in deciding what new content will be developed, and in general help define our priorities as we expand upon ‘83 towards our full launch, with additional maps, modes, and factions planned.
